Naphthalene is a chemical substance. Naphthalene molecules are formed by combining eight hydrogen atoms with ten carbon atoms. The chemical signal of naphthalene is C10H8. It is the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It is white granular crystals and has a pungent odor. It is called a polycyclic compound because several benzene cycles combine to form naphthalene. It was once widely used as a moth ball.
Naphthalene is a commonly used ingredient in various household items. It is usually used to protect clothes that have not been used for a long time from any kind of insect attack and to prevent the spread of odor. There are several other benefits to using naphthalene.

ন্যাপথালিন একটি রাসায়নিক পদার্থ। দশটি কার্বন পরমাণুর সাথে আটটি হাইড্রোজেন পরমাণু যুক্ত হয়ে ন্যাপথালিন অণু গঠিত হয়। ন্যাফথ্যালিনের রাসায়নিক সংকেত C10H8। এটা সরলতম পলিসাইক্লিক অ্যারোমেটিক হাইড্রোকার্বন। এটা সাদা দানাদার স্ফটিক এবং উগ্র গন্ধযুক্ত। কয়েকটি বেনজিন চক্র পরস্পর যুক্ত হয়ে ন্যাফথ্যালিন গঠন করে বলে একে পলিসাইক্লিক যৌগ বলা হয়। একদা পতঙ্গ গোলা বা মথ বল হিসেবে এটি বহুল ব্যবহৃত হত।
ঘরের বিভিন্ন কাজে সচরাচর ব্যবহৃত একটি উপাদান ন্যাপথালিন। সাধারণত দীর্ঘ দিন ধরে ব্যবহার না করে গুছিয়ে রাখা কাপড়ে কোনো ধরনের পোকার আক্রমণ থেকে রক্ষা এবং গন্ধ না ছড়ানোর জন্য এর ব্যবহার করা হয়। এছাড়া আরও বেশ কিছু কাজে ন্যাপথালিনের ব্যবহারে বিশেষ উপকারিতা পাওয়া যায়।
১. অফিস-আদালতে কর্মজীবীদের সাধারণত দিনের অধিকাংশ সময় পায়ে স্যু রাখতে হয়। আবার সাংবাদিকতা এবং ট্র্যাকিং করেন- এমন ব্যক্তিরা প্রায় সারাদিনই কেডস পায়ে রাখেন। সারাদিন স্যু কিংবা কেডস পায়ে রাখার ফলে মোজা এবং জুতায় উৎকট গন্ধ হয়; যা সবার জন্যই অনেক বিরক্তিকর। প্রতিদিন জুতা পরিষ্কার এবং নতুন মোজা ব্যবহার করেও অনেকে এই গন্ধ থেকে মুক্তি পান না। অনেকে আবার এ গন্ধ দূর করতে স্প্রে বা পারফিউম ব্যবহার করেন। তবু এ থেকে নিস্তার পাননা অনেকেই। তাদের জন্যই বিশেষ উপকারী উপাদান ন্যাপথালিন। সারাদিন ব্যবহারের পর রাতের বেলা জুতার ভেতর মোজাসহ একটি করে ন্যাপথালিন রেখে দিন। নিশ্চিতভাবেই উৎকট গন্ধ দূর হবে।
২. আপনি বেড়াতে যাবেন- তবে খুব বেশি পোশাক বহন করতে পারছেন না। আবার অল্প পোশাক নিয়ে ঘামের গন্ধের কারণে তা বার বার ব্যবহার করা সম্ভব হয় না। এমন দ্বিমুখী সমস্যার সমাধান দিতে পারে ন্যাপথালিন।
কয়েকটি ন্যাপথালিন গুঁড়ো করে একটি টিস্যু পেপারে নিয়ে যে পোশাকগুলো নেবেন, প্রত্যেক পোশাকের প্যাকেটে ঢুকিয়ে দিন। এরপর প্যাকেটের মুখটি ভালো করে আটকে দিন।
ঘামে ভেজা পোশাক আবারও ব্যবহার করতে হলে তা বাতাসে শুকিয়ে উপরোল্লিখিত পদ্ধতি অবলম্বন করুন। মাত্র ১০-১৫ মিনিটের মধ্যে দুর্গন্ধ দূর হবে। টি-শার্ট, গেঞ্জি, শার্ট, শাড়ি ইত্যাদি ক্ষেত্রে এই পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করা যাবে।
৩. নতুন কোনো জায়গায় বেড়াতে গেলে সেখানকার হোটেল রুমে ব্যবহার করা পারফিউম পছন্দ না হলে বা অন্য কোনো দুর্গন্ধ পাওয়া গেলে রুমের মধ্যে কিছু ন্যাপথালিন ছিটিয়ে দিন। নিমেশেই গন্ধ দূর হয়ে যাবে।
৪. কয়েকদিন ঘর তালাবদ্ধ থাকলে তেলাপোকা, ইঁদুরসহ নানা পোকা ঘরে উৎপাত শুরু করে। এ থেকে পরিত্রাণ পেতে তালা দেওয়ার আগে ঘরে ন্যাপথালিনের গুঁড়ো ছিটিয়ে দিন। ন্যাপথালিনের ব্যবহারে পোকার আক্রমণ থেকে রক্ষার পাশাপাশি তালাবদ্ধ ঘরে ভ্যাপসা গন্ধ থেকেও মুক্তি পাওয়া যাবে।
৫. নিত্য ব্যবহারের পোশাক প্রতি সপ্তাহে বা প্রতিদিন ধোয়া হয় বলে সেগুলোতে তেমন গন্ধ হয় না। তবে আলমারিতে গুছিয়ে রাখা পোশাকে ভ্যাপসা গন্ধ পাওয়া যায়। এ গন্ধ থেকে পরিত্রাণের জন্যও ন্যাপথালিন বেশ উপকারী। আলমারির কোণায় এবং কাপড়ের ভাজে ন্যাপথালিন রেখে দিন।
৬. কিচেনের সিংক, বেসিন ও বাথরুমের দুর্গন্ধ দূর করতেও ন্যাপথালিন ব্যবহার করা যায়। ন্যাপথালিন গুঁড়ো করে ছিটিয়ে রাখলে ওসব স্থানে পোকামাকড়ের উপদ্রবও হবে না।
